Data compilation
The source of the statistics is partly the annual population census per 1 January and partly urban polygons, which SDFI draws on a map theme, and which shows the geographical extent of the cities/urban polygons. The population's addresses are placed by their x and y coordinates on the map theme. Subsequently, the number of people residing within the respective cities/urban areas is counted. The population living in urban polygons/cities with less than 200 inhabitants is classified as living in rural areas. The metropolitan area is defined and treated as an urban area. Up to and including 1998, the metropolitan area consisted of entire municipalities. Since 1999, urban development has been separated within the outermost municipalities in the capital area, namely Ballerup, Rudersdal, Furesø, Ishøj and Greve municipalities, which previously belonged to the capital area, whereby the capital area constitutes a smaller area. The cities are classified according to size and inhabitants here. Cities whose population has increased or decreased a lot compared to last year are taken out for closer examination and validity check.
