    Partner and period

    Statistics Denmark works with the Ghana Statistical Service (GSS) to strengthen Ghana’s national statistical system. The current phase of the partnership runs from 2024 to 2026.

    Purpose

    The cooperation helps GSS produce and share reliable statistics that public authorities, businesses and citizens can use. It supports better use of existing data and strengthens the statistical evidence available for decisions on Ghana’s development and green transition.

    What we work on

    GSS and Statistics Denmark work together on the use of administrative data, digital statistical production, economic statistics, and environmental-economic accounts. The partnership also supports cooperation between GSS and other Ghanaian authorities that hold data or produce statistics, as well as clearer dissemination of statistical results.

    The work combines technical advice and joint development with training, expert missions and study visits.

    Selected results

    • New trade statistics: GSS launched its first Unit Value Index in its online statistical databank. The index helps users follow changes in the average value of imported and exported goods. A study visit to Denmark supported the methodological work.
    • A plan for digital development: With support from Statistics Denmark, GSS developed a draft five-year IT strategy covering areas including data management, infrastructure and information security.
    • Foundations for environmental accounts: GSS and Ghanaian partners developed a roadmap for work on waste and water accounts. Joint work also improved methods for collecting data on environmental goods and services and environmental protection expenditure. The accounts themselves require further development.

    Funding

    The project is financed by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its Strategic Sector Cooperation programme.

    Latest update

    In September 2025, representatives of Ghana’s Parliament and GSS visited Denmark to examine how statistics are used in legislation, economic planning and public oversight. Discussions highlighted two practical needs: stronger arrangements for sharing administrative data with GSS, and statistics that are timely and clear enough for parliamentary use.
