    Partner and period

    Statistics Denmark works with the National Statistics Office of Vietnam (NSO) to strengthen official statistics and their use across government. The current phase of the partnership runs from 2025 to 2027. It builds on cooperation with NSO’s predecessor, the General Statistics Office, during 2022–2024.

    Purpose

    The cooperation helps NSO produce reliable and accessible statistics for public decisions, including decisions related to the green transition. It also supports NSO’s role in improving the quality and use of data across Vietnam’s statistical system.

    What we work on

    NSO and Statistics Denmark cooperate on the use of administrative data, digital statistical production, business statistics, communication and dissemination, and environmental-economic accounts. The partnership also explores new data sources and supports cooperation with other public authorities on data quality and sharing.

    The work combines technical advice and joint development with training, expert missions and study visits.

    Selected results

    • Environmental-economic accounts: During the previous phase, the partners developed energy and emissions accounts using internationally recognised methods. This established a foundation for further work on environmental statistics.
    • Better use of administrative data: Cooperation with Vietnamese authorities advanced work on education statistics and civil registration data. Access to some important datasets remains a challenge, so data-sharing arrangements continue to be a priority.
    • Testing new methods: NSO’s predecessor strengthened staff skills in R and began testing the use of scanner data for consumer price statistics. Wider use of such data will depend on access arrangements and cooperation with data providers.

    The project is financed by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its Strategic Sector Cooperation programme.

    Latest update

    At the start of the new phase in 2025, NSO and Statistics Denmark interviewed 13 stakeholders about their needs and their experience of official statistics. They described NSO as a respected statistical institution and called for easier access to data, clearer information about methods and more regular dialogue with users. The findings are helping the partners set priorities for administrative data, digital tools and dissemination. Read more in International Consulting’s Annual Report 2025.
